The convertible had just over or so miles since my customer had purchased the car and I had added air conditioning, the aforementioned monster stereo, and some other electrical upgrades. Four miles from my shop, the delivery came to a screeching halt when the driver's side wheel bearing let go. The trailer ride back to my shop was followed by an uncomfortable phone call to the customer. CSRP is breathing new life into an old conversion with its new spindle castings and brake kits.

The outer washer should not be cone shaped. Bearing failure meant material from the bearing embedded itself into the spindle, destroying the spindle. Forty-year-old spindles from a non-Mustang are getting scarce, and the used equipment may not be suitable for re-use. In a quick online search of auctions and nationwide classified ads, I discovered an important fact: plus year-old Granada spindles are getting pretty scarce, and those that are out there may be a roll of the dice as far as usability.

I have even heard this from several of my close associates. However, there was already a considerable amount of money spent on the upgrade, so we looked to salvage as much of the conversion as possible. Dennis Ginsberg and his group have taken the tried-and-tested Granada swap and re-made it into an honest option for the modern Mustang retro-upgrade.

The company has solutions for all the above issues with the original swap, and it is a conversion that not only works, but is quite cost effective. And the good part: CSRP is making all new components, so there is no trekking through junkyards or buying worn-out components from unknown vendors online. Ford went through three iterations of tie rods in The tie rod became the standard, and it is a good piece.

The early Mustang spindles are on the small side, so the upgrade to the Granada spindle solves that problem. The single-piston caliper was installed on five million vehicles, so it worked well, and the inch rotors are fine for most street applications. Now, the bad part: bumpsteer and toe in, small brakes, tie rod mismatch, and the inability to run inch wheels are all problems. Although the Granada spindle has the same geometry as the Mustang, it differs from the Mustang. The Mustang steering arm is slightly longer, which means the arc of the tie rod is pushed in, which shortens the tie rod length and adds to bumpsteer.

Shortening the tie rods also pulls the tie rods together, and some have stated that the toe cannot be set because the tie rods are adjusted all the way in. Aug 23, 54 38 My uncle recently bought a Mustang coupe that still has front drum brakes. He has also acquired a pair of front spindles,rotors, and calipers that are supposed to be off of a Maverick.

Mar 21, 18 39 Kingman AZ. I have a lot of experience with 60's and 70's Ford spindles. Here is my guide for classic Ford based on the Falcon chassis. There are a lot of opinions, right and wrong concerning the disc brake swaps for 60s and 70s Ford.

I have made it my business over the last 15 months to get to know these systems. Spindle Types more properly called steering knuckles. Many of Fords compact and intermediate car line in the 60s and 70s were based on the Falcon chassis. The basic suspensions in all of those cars are the same, with minor differences in outer tie rods.

A light weight drum brake spindle used with 6 cylinder cars Used on Mustang, and on Falcon. A drum spindle which was adapted for disk brake use using a bracket. This is the 8 cylinder spindle and is relatively lightweight and was originally designed for 10" drum brake application.

This spindle uses a slightly larger outer tie rod mounting hole than the previous types. This was used on Mustangs, and on Falcons. A drum brake spindle which was adapted on 67 Mustang and Falcons for disc brakes using a bracket.Start out with removal of your drum brake spindles and outer tie rods, master cylinder and brake distribution block.

This is a good time to replace upper and lower ball joints if needed. Upper A-frame removal is not required unless you will also be replacing the upper A-frame bushings or spring saddle perch. The ones you find in a wrecking yard probably will not look this clean.

Look for rotors that are marked with MIN. Note: Versailles disc brakes use a larger diameter lower ball joint stud, and require the use of an adapter to be able to bolt up to the Mustang lower ball joint, more on that later. Those will not fit a Mustang. If you have a set of brakes that look similar to these, but has a rotor thickness of 1" or more, those brakes will NOT work on your Mustang or other classic Ford. Spindles, backing plates, rotors, calipers, caliper mounting hardware which consists of flat spring, slide clamp and attaching boltthe rubber brake hoses, the frame brackets where the rubber hoses mate up to the steel lines at the frame rail, the threaded flare nuts from that same fitting they are a unique sizethe proportioning valve along with all it's flare nuts intact, and any steel brake lines that have the coiled wire wrapped around them.

The coiled wrap will be removed and installed on your new steel lines, so just cut the tubes with side cutter pliers for quick and easy removal. Same for the proportioning valve.

Security Check

Do not try to loosen the flare nuts while removing the valve, just cut the tubes about 1" away from the valve. That way, you can use a box end wrench to remove the nuts when you get home. Take note of which fittings on the valve went to where. If the donor car has no proportioning valve available, get one from any mid sized Ford car or Mustang with front discs and rear drums. Try to get the valve from a car that still has brake fluid in the system to avoid purchasing one with dried out seals.

You will NOT need the ball joints or the upper a-frame. In some cases the outer tie rod ends can be utilized, get them only if in perfect condition. If your car is a6 cylinder Mustang, don't bother getting the tie rods.

More on the tie rod issue later You may also need Tie rod adapter bushings see Part Eight. Also required will be brake fluid, master cylinder if being replaced and new steel brake lines. Tools will include various sizes of SAE sockets and box end wrenches, SAE inverted flare tools, allen wrench, adjustable wrench, needle nose pliers, SAE inverted flare tube flare tools, and possibly a small tubing bender.

These various sized fittings are available at PepBoys. They have the correct ends for the Maverick Master Cylinder. They look like a botched installation and provide more potential for leaks. Brakes won't bleed properly? Be sure you have the calipers on the right side of the car. Bleeder points to REAR of car! Lowered cars need more caster typically.

This is not gospel, but I have had good luck with these. If you have a that is lowered, you WILL be able to tell these spindles steer differently and are prone to severe bumpsteer. That is the reason for the zero toe. If you have a choice, use original, same year as car, Mustang spindles and disc brakes. The car will steer and corner better. Hey Guys, it's been a while since I posted. I developed a rear disc brake conversion kit that adapt Mustang and Mustang GT rear disc brakes to the stock small-bearing 8 and 9 inch housings in early fords. They proportion extremely well with the factory front 4-piston KH disc brakes, fit inside a 15" wheel, and don't change the track width.

Quick update, with the help of another member, I was able to finish the brackets to mount These do require a minimum of 16" wheels but do not change the track width. Install photos below.
